Great Little Walk
If you ever visit the San Bernardino mountains in California, with your children, be sure to stop at the Children's Forrest. Between Running Spring, considered in Running Springs, and Big Bear Lake. Your at around 7,000 ft.
When my children were small we would go there at least once a week in summer. At three and four years old when we started walking the trail, you can make it as short or long a walk as you like. Be sure to have water with you. The sun can be hot.
Things To See
There are plaques all about the place explaining the plants that grow there. You will see small lizards running about the rocks. Don't worry. They're more afraid you you than you are of them. A Hawk maybe seen flying over head. There is a population of Bald Eagles living in Big Bear and you very well could spot one. Toward the back of the Forrest there is a pond. A ski slope is located just up the road and they use the water to make snow. eagles do like fish.
The most wonderful site we encountered was a mother mountain quail leading her family about. A protected bird there on the mountain, one of the most beautiful birds I have ever seen. Just like in the cartoons of your childhood with the top not hanging over their head.
They have expanded to park since I moved away. With help from privet funding and grants.
I moved in 1992 and it was a great place then. Bigger and better now I'm sure.
My two where fascinated by the place. I read all the plaques to them and I could see how the place kept there interest each and every time we went there. I lived there for eight years and they never grew tired of it. Changing all the time. different flower would bloom. There is Liken growing on the rocks and giant boulders. Birds, bugs, and creatures. The sky is beautiful there also. Above all the smog, It's a great blue sky. Giant fluffy white clouds can come floating by.
Keller's Peak
This also is the entrance road to Keller's Peak. If you drive up to the top there is a fire watch tower. It's not maned any more but you can enter it when they have it opened. It's a little climb up the stairs. The view makes it well worth it.
At the top of the tower you're at 10,000 Ft.
Eats
If you are getting hungry after your walk there a couple places to get a bite to eat in Running Springs. Hamburgers and fries to a steak. If you enjoy Mexican food, a little place called Toto's has the best!
I lived there for eight years and it's a small little dot on the map. Take less than half a minuet to drive through. There is a lot do do and see on the mountain year round.
A great to visit and live for that matter. I miss the place.
