How To Move Into And Decorate An Apartment In A Weekend

Once you rent an apartment and your lease is signed, you're on your way to a new home. When moving day comes and the space is move-in ready, then what? It's time to prep, prep, prep so you can move into and decorate an apartment in a weekend. One weekend, one plan and one apartment - it's definitely doable. Here are 7 steps to making it work:

1. Take inventory - Make a list of what are you getting rid of, what are you keeping and what are you throwing away so you can make provisions for each category. By writing it down, you have a visual of what you have and where it is going.

2. Take measurements - By measuring all of the furniture you'll be keeling as well as taking the dimensions of the rooms of your new apartment, you'll be able to do some pre-planning. From there, sketch out the room and furniture on graph paper or use one of the free online space planning tools to arrange your apartment ahead of time, which will save you a lot of grief and labor.

3. Decorating and design planning - You can start to decorate an apartment before you move in - take inventory of what you have, shop for what you want or need, then purchase ahead of time. This way, the decorating is done and all you have to do is set it up. Pinterest is a great tool to visually organize your decorating plan - and find inspiration. Use it!

4. Plan, plan, plan - Using a moving company? Line them up now. If not a moving company, do you have friends volunteered to help and a moving truck rented? Confirm the dates with everyone now so that no special circumstances pop up on moving day.

5. Pack and label strategically - Make sure your boxes are labeled correctly and packed well so you can get the boxes where they need to go, streamlining the process when time counts.

6. It's time to move - Streamline your moving by placing large items first, putting boxes in their designated rooms and begin unpacking immediately - one room at a time. Start with the important things like your clothes and a place to sleep. Then move on from there to the bathroom and kitchen.

7. It's time to decorate - Unpack all those new pillows and throws, hang the new (and old) art, and watch as the space comes to life around you.

By planning ahead, you save valuable time wondering what to do on moving day. Spend your time on moving weekend for the actual moving and be back in the easy chair by Sunday evening.
