As a parent if you feel that your school isn't doing much about bullying, is there anything you can do?
Is it possible for you to get a policy and anti bullying program started at your school?
Well to be truthful, it depends on the school, but there is no reason not to try...this is a much better approach that just having a go at the school for not doing anything. This will just make you more frustrated and not get you anywhere.
Often one of the reasons why bullying may not be dealt with effectively at a school is that teachers and school administration can become so busy - that having the time to get something started often doesn't happen. Sometimes all it needs is one person who is willing to take on the role to get it started and give it some momentum and then things gets happening. This is what I did as a teacher - in my extra time I did the research, chose a program and got it happening.
As a parent can you do this?
There is nothing stopping you from going to the school and saying that you want to be involved in getting an anti bullying program going and these are your ideas.
Before you do this however, it would help to do some homework and get some support.
Rather than trying to do it all by yourself, get a couple of other parents to be a part of the process.
Do some research and decide on a plan as to how you will approach the school. The more thought out and organized this is, the better. It would also helpful if you show how, as parents, you are willing to work within the school parameters and be guided by the school as to how this will work for both you as parents and them as educators.
Put together as many reasons as you can as to why you think an anti bullying program should be run in your school. It may help to survey other parents to find out whether their child has been bullied and how they felt the school dealt with it. Please note, the last thing you want to do is to get into having a go at the school. What you are wanting to show is that more needs to be done and you are willing to be part of the process to get this happening.
It may help to find schools that are running successful anti bullying programs - see what they are using and how these have been implemented and running in the school. However, the ultimate choice of program will be up to the school.
It might also be helpful if your research includes possible sources of funding to support setting up an anti bullying program.
You will still need to have teachers on board as they will be the ones running the program, however if you can be involved in helping getting it happening; be part of a team along with teachers to review or develop a policy that works; help with keeping the no bully message going; and help keep the school accountable in having an effective anti bullying message, then you have gone a long way to getting things happening.
In all of this if all you achieve is to highlight the need for a greater focus on dealing with bullying and increased help for student and parents in the area of bullying - then this is a start.
Good luck with your venture, love to hear how you go.
